Landing in Denpasar with no signal is a bad start to a Bali trip, especially when you need maps to find the villa or a Grab to get there. An eSIM sorts this before you leave home, so the phone just works the moment you touch down.

Does an eSIM work in Bali

Yes. Indonesia eSIM plans cover Bali along with the rest of the country, so one plan works whether you're in Seminyak or Ubud. The eSIM arrives by email within minutes of buying it, and it installs over wifi, ideally at home before you fly, or at the airport if that's the only option left. The plan's days don't start ticking at purchase. They start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Indonesia, so buying early costs nothing and takes one thing off the pre-flight list.

How much data two weeks actually takes

For most travellers, two weeks of maps, WhatsApp, Instagram, a scooter route most days and some streaming back at the villa lands somewhere in the middle range rather than at either extreme. What pushes usage up: video calls home, streaming shows over data instead of villa wifi, and using the phone as a hotspot for a laptop. Every Indonesia plan we sell allows hotspot use, so tethering a laptop for a bit of work isn't a problem, it just adds to the total.

Which size fits which traveller

The light user, mostly on villa or café wifi and just needing data for Grab and maps on the go, can look at a smaller plan, something in the 1 to 3 GB range over a week or so.

The normal user, checking maps constantly, posting daily, messaging home and streaming a little each evening, should look at a mid-size plan, around 5 to 10 GB across the length of the stay.

The heavy user, working from cafés, on video calls often or streaming a lot on the move, is better matched to a larger plan, up to the 20 GB option for a full month, which comfortably covers two weeks with room to spare.

Calling home

There are no Calls + SMS plans for Indonesia, so a Bali eSIM is data only. That's rarely a problem in practice: WhatsApp and FaceTime audio both run over data and cover calls home without issue. The traveller's own SIM and number stay in the phone the whole time, which matters for bank login codes and any texts from family that come through as SMS.

Phone settings that stop roaming charges and save battery

A few settings make the trip smoother. Set the Telisco eSIM as the data line. Turn data roaming off on the home SIM so it can't quietly rack up charges in the background. On iPhone, switch off Wi-Fi Assist so the phone doesn't jump onto mobile data every time wifi wobbles. On Android, turn off adaptive connectivity for the same reason. All three take under a minute and are worth doing before leaving home.

Night before the flight checklist

Install the eSIM over home wifi and confirm it shows as installed (not yet active). Turn off data roaming on the home SIM and set the new eSIM as the data line ready for landing.
