One of the most common questions before a trip: "can I share my eSIM data with my laptop?" Yes. Telisco eSIMs support hotspot and tethering just like a regular SIM, and for many travelers one generous plan on one phone is simpler and cheaper than connecting every device separately.

Turning the hotspot on

  • iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join. Make sure the travel eSIM is selected as your data line first (Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data).
  • Android: Settings → Network & Internet → Hotspot & tethering → Wi-Fi hotspot. Same rule: the eSIM must be the active data SIM.

Your laptop or your family's phones then join it like any Wi-Fi network. USB tethering also works and saves battery on the phone.

How much data does a laptop actually use?

More than you expect, a laptop behaves like a hungry desktop, not like a phone:

  • Email and documents: light, well under 100 MB per working day.
  • Web browsing and Slack-style apps: 100-300 MB per day.
  • Video meetings: 500 MB to 1 GB per hour, the single biggest consumer.
  • The silent killers: cloud photo backup, OS updates and file sync. Pause these before connecting, one unplanned update can eat a gigabyte in minutes.

A realistic budget for working days abroad: 1-2 GB per day with meetings, half that without. For a week of remote work, look at 10-20 GB or an unlimited plan.

Travelers sharing one phone connection on the go

Sharing with family: one plan or several?

For a family trip, two setups work well:

  • One big plan + hotspot: cheapest and simplest. The parent's phone carries a 20 GB or unlimited plan and everyone joins its hotspot at the cafe or apartment. Downside: the devices are only online when together, and the host phone's battery works harder.
  • One eSIM per phone: everyone is independent, ideal for teenagers exploring on their own. Small plans for light users keep the total reasonable.

Many families mix both: eSIMs on the two phones that leave the group, hotspot for tablets and laptops that stay with the luggage.

Three hotspot tips from the road

  • Carry a power bank, hosting a hotspot is the biggest battery drain a phone has.
  • Set the laptop's connection as "metered" (Windows) or use Low Data Mode (Mac) so background sync behaves.
  • Check your remaining data each evening at telisco.com/my-esims, hotspot days are exactly when the 50%/80%/95% alert emails earn their keep.

Frequently asked questions

Is hotspot allowed on all Telisco plans?

On most plans, yes. Each plan’s details say Hotspot: Allowed when the supplier states it for that plan. When the details say Not stated, the supplier does not pass this information to us, so we cannot guarantee it: hotspot usually works on those plans too, but it is not promised. On unlimited plans the fair-use policy applies to total usage, hotspot included.

Does hotspot data count double?

No. A gigabyte used by your laptop through the hotspot is simply a gigabyte from your plan, same as if the phone used it.

How many devices can join one phone's hotspot?

Most phones allow 5 to 10 simultaneous devices. Speed is shared, so a family movie night works better on one screen than four.

Why is my hotspot slower than the phone's own internet?

A little overhead is normal. If it's dramatic, move the phone nearer a window (better signal) and reconnect the laptop, it sometimes latches onto the slower 2.4 GHz band.

Can I run a hotspot and use the phone at the same time?

Yes, the phone stays fully usable, browsing, maps and calls over the internet all keep working while it hosts the hotspot.
