Motorola was early to eSIM in an unusual way: the phone that brought it to the range was the revived Razr in 2019, which had no room for a SIM tray at all and used eSIM out of necessity. Support has since spread across the premium part of the line.
Check this phone in one tap
Let the page work out which handset you are on, or type the model. It answers straight away, and it tells you how sure it is.
Motorola models that support eSIM
Every Razr from the 2019 revival onwards, including the Razr 40 and Razr 50 generations and their Ultra variants. The Edge 40 and Edge 50 series.
Motorola models that do not
Most of the Moto G range and the Moto E range. These are budget phones and eSIM is not usually part of the specification, though a small number of recent G models are exceptions, so the check below is worth running.
How to check your Motorola
Open Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, or on some versions Settings → Network & internet → Mobile network. An option to add an eSIM or to download a SIM means your phone has it. Motorola runs close to stock Android, so the menus look much like a Pixel's.
The check that always works
Open your phone's dialler and type *#06#. You do not need to press call. A panel appears with your device identifiers. If one of them is labelled EID, a 32-digit number, your phone has eSIM hardware. No EID means no eSIM.
This works on any phone, any brand, any region, and it is the only check that cannot be thrown off by a model name that was sold in several different versions.
If you have a Razr
The Razr folding models are the most reliably eSIM-capable phones Motorola makes. On the original 2019 Razr, eSIM is the only way to connect at all, so a travel plan is exactly what that handset was designed around.
What if your phone does not support eSIM?
Then a travel eSIM is not an option for that handset, and no app or update will change it: the eSIM chip is physical hardware. Your realistic choices are a local physical SIM bought on arrival, your own operator's roaming package, or using an older eSIM-capable phone as a second device. If you are close to replacing the phone anyway, every current flagship and most current mid-range models have eSIM built in.
